Frequently Asked Questions

What order should I read the Dragonriders of Pern?
Start with the original trilogy: DragonflightDragonquestThe White Dragon. The Harper Hall trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums) runs parallel and can be read between Books 2 and 3 of the main trilogy or after. Beyond that, later Pern novels can be read in publication order.
Is science required to enjoy the Pern novels?
No — despite the science fiction framing (dragons are biologically engineered; Pern is a colony planet), the Pern books read as fantasy. The science fiction elements are background. The emotional core is always the bond between rider and dragon.
Did Anne McCaffrey's son continue the series?
Yes — Todd McCaffrey wrote several solo Pern novels after his mother's death in 2011, including Dragonsblood, Dragonheart, and others. He also co-wrote several novels with his mother before her death. These continue the universe but have a somewhat different tone.
