Rick Riordan spent fifteen years as a middle school English and history teacher in San Antonio, Texas, before becoming a full-time author. He created Percy Jackson for his son Haley, who had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and was struggling to engage with reading. Riordan invented Percy — a demigod hero whose ADHD gives him battlefield awareness and whose dyslexia is actually his brain being hardwired for ancient Greek — to make Haley feel like his traits were superpowers, not deficits. That idea became one of the best-selling middle grade series in history. Riordan has since built the "Mythverse," expanding into Egyptian, Norse, and Roman mythology across multiple interconnected series. He also founded the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, which publishes mythology-based fantasy from diverse authors representing cultures around the world. The Disney+ adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has aired two seasons to wide acclaim.
Start Here — Percy Jackson and the Olympians
The original series that launched the Mythverse. Percy Jackson discovers he is the son of a Greek god and must navigate a world of monsters, prophecies, and Olympian politics. Ages 9 and up — genuinely funny and smart at any age.
Reader Tip
Start with The Lightning Thief (age 9+). Adults can absolutely enjoy these — they are funnier and smarter than you'd expect. ADHD/dyslexia representation is meaningful at any age, and the mythological depth rewards readers who know their Greek gods.
A direct sequel series to Percy Jackson, expanding the Mythverse to include Roman demigods at Camp Jupiter. Features a larger ensemble cast including fan favourite Annabeth Chase. Read Percy Jackson first.
The god Apollo is cast down to Earth as a mortal teenager named Lester and must complete a series of trials to regain his divine status. Features Nico di Angelo prominently. Read Heroes of Olympus first.
A standalone trilogy set in the same Mythverse but focused on Egyptian mythology. Siblings Carter and Sadie Kane discover they are descended from ancient Egyptian magicians. Can be read independently from the Greek series.
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard — Norse Mythology
A trilogy set in Boston and the Norse mythological realms, featuring Magnus Chase — a cousin of Annabeth from the Percy Jackson series. Introduces Samirah al-Abbas, one of Riordan's most popular characters.
Nico di Angelo — son of Hades and fan favourite since The Titan's Curse — receives his own novel. Co-written with Mark Oshiro, who brings lived experience to Nico's journey of identity and self-acceptance.
The Sun and the Star
Reader TipThe Sun and the Star is best read after completing The Trials of Apollo, as it builds on Nico's character arc across that series. It is co-authored with Mark Oshiro and deals with themes of identity, belonging, and self-acceptance.
Start with Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Books 1–5), then move to The Heroes of Olympus (Books 1–5), then The Trials of Apollo (Books 1–5). The Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase trilogies can be read alongside or after the main Greek series — they share the same Mythverse but are largely independent. For the full Mythverse experience in order: Percy Jackson → Heroes of Olympus → Kane Chronicles → Magnus Chase → Trials of Apollo → The Sun and the Star.
Is Percy Jackson for adults?
Absolutely. Although marketed as middle grade (ages 9–12), the Percy Jackson series is beloved by readers of all ages. The mythology is genuinely complex, the humour is witty rather than childish, and the emotional themes — identity, belonging, self-worth — resonate across age groups. Adults who came to the series late frequently report that it is much smarter and funnier than expected. Many readers in their 20s and 30s discovered it during the Disney+ adaptation and found the books equally rewarding.
How many Rick Riordan mythology series are there?
Five main series spanning three mythologies: Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Greek), The Heroes of Olympus (Greek/Roman), The Trials of Apollo (Greek/Roman), The Kane Chronicles (Egyptian), and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (Norse). The Sun and the Star is a spinoff novel. Riordan also founded the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, which publishes mythology fiction from diverse cultures by other authors.
Is there a Percy Jackson TV show?
Yes — Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on Disney+ in December 2023 and has completed two seasons as of 2025. Riordan was closely involved with the production as a writer and producer, addressing criticisms of the earlier film adaptations. The show follows the books much more faithfully and stars Walker Scobell as Percy. Season 2 covers The Sea of Monsters.
Do I need to read the Kane Chronicles or Magnus Chase?
Neither series is required reading to follow the main Greek/Roman storyline through Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, and Trials of Apollo. However, both are excellent — the Kane Chronicles introduces Egyptian mythology through sibling protagonists Carter and Sadie Kane, while Magnus Chase brings Norse mythology and features one of the Mythverse's most celebrated characters, Samirah al-Abbas. There are also short crossover stories where the casts meet. If you love the Mythverse, both trilogies are well worth reading.
