About Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek is a British-American author and motivational speaker whose 2009 TED Talk "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" became the third most-watched TED Talk of all time, with over 60 million views. It introduced the Golden Circle — his framework built around the idea that great leaders start with WHY, not WHAT or HOW.

His books extend that central insight into leadership, trust, organizational culture, and long-term thinking. Sinek consults for major corporations and government organizations, and his work is widely assigned in business schools. He writes accessibly, with heavy use of case studies from Apple, Southwest Airlines, the military, and other organizations.

Start With Why cover
Book 1 — Start Here
Start With Why
2009
The book that launched Sinek's career and introduced the Golden Circle. Why do some people and companies inspire while others don't? The answer is that great leaders communicate from the inside out — starting with purpose (WHY), not product (WHAT). Uses Apple, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Wright Brothers as extended examples.

Book 2
Leaders Eat Last
2014
Why do some teams pull together while others don't? Sinek argues that great leaders create a "Circle of Safety" where people feel protected — not from the difficulties of the job, but from each other. Draws on biology (cortisol, oxytocin, serotonin) and case studies from the military and corporations.

The Infinite Game cover
Book 5
The Infinite Game
2019
Sinek's most ambitious book. Drawing on James Carse's distinction between finite and infinite games, he argues that most businesses play a finite game (beating the competition) when they should be playing an infinite game (outlasting it). The goal isn't to win — it's to keep playing. A genuine evolution of his thinking.

Reading Guide

Where to start

Start With Why is essential — watch the TED Talk first (18 minutes) to decide if his ideas resonate. If they do, the book expands them significantly.

Then Leaders Eat Last for the trust and culture angle, and The Infinite Game for his most developed thinking on long-term strategy.

Skip Together Is Better unless you're buying it as a gift. Find Your Why is worth reading if you want to apply the framework practically.
