Andy Weir self-published The Martian in 2011 after it was rejected by literary agents. It was later acquired by Crown Publishing and became a bestseller, adapted into the 2015 Ridley Scott film starring Matt Damon. Each of Weir's novels is a completely standalone work set in a different universe.

Weir's signature is scientifically rigorous problem-solving: his protagonists survive through physics, chemistry, and biology rather than luck or magic. Reading in publication order is recommended but not required.
