by Terry Brooks · The original epic fantasy series that proved Tolkien wasn't a fluke — 25+ novels spanning thousands of years of a post-apocalyptic world.
Start with the original trilogy (Books 1–3). Many readers then read Heritage of Shannara (4 books set 300 years later). The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara and High Druid of Shannara trilogies continue the timeline. The Fall of Shannara (2017–2020) is the series finale.
Many experienced readers recommend The Elfstones as the best single Shannara novel, and it works as a standalone. The MTV series The Shannara Chronicles adapted Elfstones, not the original novel. Starting there is a valid entry point.
Over 25 novels across seven interconnected series. The main arcs are: Original Trilogy (3), Heritage of Shannara (4), Voyage of the Jerle Shannara (3), High Druid of Shannara (3), Genesis of Shannara (3, urban fantasy bridge), Legends of Shannara (2), Fall of Shannara (4). Plus the prequel First King of Shannara.
