Series Reading Order

The complete guide to Kiera Cass's Selection series — 5 novels and all the novellas, in the order that works best.

By Ruben Montané · Updated June 2026 · 5 novels + novellas

The Selection is a five-book YA romance series by Kiera Cass, set in the dystopian kingdom of Illéa. Thirty-five girls are selected to compete for the hand of Prince Maxon — a premise that sounds like a fairy tale but evolves into something sharper about class, power, and identity.

The original trilogy (The Selection, The Elite, The One) follows America Singer. The follow-up duology (The Heir, The Crown) jumps twenty years forward to follow America and Maxon's daughter Eadlyn, who is thornier, more ambitious, and arguably more interesting. The novellas are optional — but fans love them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to read the novellas?
No — the main five novels tell the complete story. The novellas add perspective and depth for fans who want more, but they're not required. Read The Prince (Maxon's POV) first if you're curious — it's the most essential of the novellas.
Should I read The Heir and The Crown?
Yes, if you love the world. Eadlyn's story is initially divisive — she's pricklier and more entitled than America — but she grows considerably. The Crown in particular is emotionally rewarding. Most fans are glad they continued.
Is The Selection appropriate for young readers?
Yes — The Selection is clean YA with no explicit content. Suitable for readers aged 12 and up. The romance is sweet rather than steamy.
Is The Selection going to be a TV show or movie?
The Selection has been in development for screen adaptation multiple times over the years. As of 2026, no confirmed production is underway, though the rights have been optioned previously.
